Nicole Murphy: Bridge

A piece written for mixed ensemble by composer Nicole Murphy.

Program Note: That bridge was a construction of regret, the architecture of longing, over a river of melancholy. — Richard James Allen, The Kamikaze Mind About the Composer: Australian composer Nicole Murphy (www.nicolemurphy.com.au) completed her Masters of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2011, under the tutelage of Dr. Gerardo Dirié. During her undergraduate degree she studied under composer Gerard Brophy, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music (Composition) with First Class Honours. Nicole is the recipient of various awards, including the Definiens C3 International Composer’s Award (2011), the Alan Lane Award for Composition (2004), the A.G. Francis Prize for Composition (2001) and the Collusion/QCGU Composition Prize, for her setting of Australian writer John Tranter’s work The Moment of Waking (2004). Most recently, she has been selected as the composer representing Australia at the 2012 Asian Contemporary Music Festival. Nicole has been commissioned by eminent arts organisations, including the Australian Ballet (2007), the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (2008), Orchestra Victoria (2010) and the Definiens Project (2012). She has had her music performed by ensembles such as the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Ars Nova Dallas, the Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Orchestra, Chronology Arts and Halcyon. She is represented as an Associate Artist by the Australian Music Centre and currently holds the position of Composer-in-Residence at the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries.
